Hiring a web designer affects your business for years. A good choice means a website that generates leads. A poor choice means wasted money. Here is how to get it right.
1. Check Their Portfolio
Look at actual client websites they have built. Click through them. Do they load quickly? Do they look professional? Do links work? Have they worked with businesses similar to yours?
2. Look at Recent Work
A portfolio that has not been updated since 2020 is a concern. Web standards change. Ask what they are working on now.
3. Understand Their Process
Do they meet with you to understand your business before designing? Do they create a plan? Do they show drafts? Do they include revisions and training? A designer who starts building without understanding your business is a risk.
4. Local vs Distant
A local Zimbabwean designer understands your market, payment methods, and customer behaviour. They are in your timezone. A distant designer might charge less but support can be harder to arrange.
5. Ask About Support
Your website needs updates, security patches, and someone to call when something breaks. Ask what support is included after launch and what it costs.
6. Communication
You will work with this person for weeks or months. Do they explain things clearly? Do they respond to emails promptly? Trust your gut.
7. Get Terms in Writing
Confirm total cost, payment schedule, timeline, revision rounds, who owns the site, and what happens if you are not satisfied.
